Raspberry Pi Pico

Raspberry Pi comes with a new product! The Raspberry Pi Pico. This is the first microcontroller board from the Raspberry Pi foundation. In this article we will tell you everything you need to know about the Raspberry Pi Pico.

Raspberry Pi releases Pi Pico module with own 133MHz chip

Raspberry Pi has released a new module. This module has a self-designed microcontroller for the first time. The Pi Pico uses the RP2040, a microcontroller with two ARM Cortex-M0 + cores. The module costs only €6.95. ( ORDER HERE )

This is the first time that the foundation behind the Raspberry Pi has created its own microcontroller. According to the foundation, the module with RP2040 is not only cheap, but also supports many external devices. It is also a relatively powerful device. The two cores of the RP2040 have a clock speed of 133MHz and an on-chip memory of 264 kilobytes. The chip also supports up to 16MB of flash program memory. In terms of clock speed, the board can compete with other microcontrollers such as the ESP8266.

The Pi Pico board itself is a headerless module. It has thirty GPIO pins, four of which can be used as analog inputs. It also has 2MB of flash memory. The controller has a power supply that accepts 1.8 to 5.5V. This allows the device to be controlled with two or three switched AA cells. The board also has a DMA controller, two UARTs, two SPI controllers and 16 PWM channels.

The board also has a micro USB1.1 connector that can serve as a host and device. And it is possible to upload software via USB with a physical button on the module. Other electronics manufacturers have also developed modules based on the RP2040. Including Adafruit, Arduino, Pimeroni and Sparkfun. The Pi Pico is in principle immediately available for sale, although not all suppliers have the device in stock yet.

The difference between a Raspberry Pi and the Pi Pico

The standard Raspberry Pi boards handle heavy computation, network access and storage. However, the Pico microcontroller offers analog input and low-latency I/O processing. The microcontroller also has a very energy-efficient standby mode.

Because it is a small device, the specifications are also minuscule. The RP2040 consists of a dual-core Arm Cortex-M0+ running at 133MHz, 26 kilobytes of on-chip RAM. And support for up to 16MB of off-chip Flash memory via a dedicated QSPI bus.

Want to buy Pi Pico?

If you’re interested in learning about microcontrollers, building embedded systems, or just looking for an affordable way to experiment with hardware, the Raspberry Pi Pico is definitely worth considering. However, if you’re looking for a more powerful device for more advanced projects or something that can function as a full-fledged computer, another Raspberry Pi model, such as the Raspberry Pi 5, might be a better choice.

Arduino Nano RP2040

Arduino has released the Arduino Nano RP2040. This is the latest addition to the Arduino Nano family. Just like the Pi Pico, the board is based on the RP2040 chip. This new board will feature various sensors such as a 9-axis IMU and a microphone.
