What is a Raspberry Pi Compute Module?
A Raspberry Pi Compute Module is a small computer module for installation in a custom device. The processor and RAM are located on the module. Many versions also include eMMC storage.
You combine it with a base board, also known as a carrier board or IO Board . That board provides the connections for your project. This allows you to choose the appearance of your device and which ports to use. Think of a control panel, a measurement setup, or an information screen.
Compute Module 4, Compute Module 5 or CM4S?
The Compute Module 4 uses the base of the Raspberry Pi 4. The Compute Module 5 uses the base of the Raspberry Pi 5. Compare the computing power and connections with what your software requires.
The CM4S has a different connector than the CM4 and CM5. This SO-DIMM format matches the form factor of older Compute Modules. Always check the correct version for an existing design.
How much RAM and storage do you need?
RAM determines how much space your software has to execute tasks simultaneously. Choose the amount based on your programs and the planned load.
eMMC is fixed storage for your operating system and files. A Lite version does not have eMMC. In this case, you use external storage, such as a microSD card, via a compatible baseboard. Check the RAM and storage variant for each module.
With or without Wi-Fi and Bluetooth?
With the CM4 and CM5, you can choose between variants with or without wireless. A wireless version offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This may be suitable for sensors or devices without a network cable. Check the full product code, as similar modules may have different features.
Choosing a suitable IO Board
Not every IO Board fully supports every Compute Module. Check the combination before ordering a module. Also consider the power supply, cooling, and the connections for your screen or sensors.
