The Adafruit BME680 sensor offers complete environmental analysis in a compact package. This small but powerful sensor measures temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and VOC gases. Users benefit from SPI or I2C connectivity at an attractive price. Similar to the BME280 and BMP280, this sensor from Bosch offers precise measurements. It measures humidity with an accuracy of ±3%, barometric pressure with ±1 hPa, and temperature with ±1.0°C. Thanks to its precise pressure measurements, the BME680 can also be used as an altimeter, with an accuracy of ±1 meter.
A unique feature of the BME680 is the MOX sensor. This sensor responds to changes in resistance caused by VOCs in the air. For example, it detects gases and alcohols, such as ethanol and carbon monoxide. The sensor provides a total VOC value, but does not distinguish between different gases or alcohols. Calibration against known sources is necessary for accurate measurements. However, the sensor does provide a good picture of trends and comparisons in air quality.
For ease of use, the sensor is mounted on a PCB with a 3.3V regulator and level shifter. This makes it easy to use with 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers. All pins of the BME680 are available on standard 2.54mm pitch headers, ideal for breadboards. The sensor also now features Stemma QT connectors (compatible with SparkFun Qwiic) for solder-free connections. A QT cable is available separately.
